A card game is any game using playing cards as the primary device with which the game is played, be they traditional or game-specific. Countless card games exist, including families of related games (such as poker). A small number of card games played with traditional decks have formally standardized rules, but most are folk games whose rules vary by region, culture, person, or family.
The rules of casino blackjack are generally determined by law or regulation, which establishes certain rule variations allowed at the discretion of the casino. The rule variations of any particular game are generally posted on or near the table. You can ask the dealer if the variations are not clearly posted.
Card games can be divided into two types based on the number of players. For some games, such as whist, bridge, and spades, each player must follow suit if able; if unable to follow suit, the player may play any card. These games are known as "suit games". In other games, such as hearts, poker, and blackjack, players may choose any card they wish to play. These games are known as "trump games". Some games use multiple suits, so more than one card of the same rank may be played.
Games such as poker are often described as "draw" or "stud" games, because some cards are dealt face up to the players and some cards are dealt face down, so that the players cannot see all of the cards. Other games such as blackjack or baccarat have only one card dealt face up to the player, so that all other cards are visible to the player. In many games, such as poker or blackjack, players take turns being the dealer, and the position of dealer rotates around the table.
A deck of cards is a set of playing cards, usually consisting of one or more regular 52-card decks, with no jokers. A standard French deck of 52 cards is the most common deck of playing cards used today. It includes 13 ranks of each of the 4 French suits: clubs (♣), diamonds (♦), hearts (♥) and spades (♠), with reversible "court" or face cards. Each suit includes an ace, a king, a queen, and a jack, each depicted with a symbol of its suit; and ranks two through ten, with each card depicting that number of pips of its suit. As well as these 52 cards, commercial packs often include between one and six jokers, most often two. Decks with two jokers are known as "double-headed" decks. Some games require multiple decks shuffled together to form a single pack or shoe.
The composition of a deck of cards is known to each player. For each type of card game, there is a standard deck of cards. For example, in a game of poker, each player is dealt two cards face down, which are their "hole cards". The dealer then deals five more cards, face up, in the middle of the table, which are called the "community cards". These are the cards that all of the players can use to make their best five-card hand. In games such as blackjack or baccarat, each player is dealt two cards, face up, and the dealer deals one more card, face up, in the middle of the table.
